The evening’s program is set to include two premières for string quartet: Caroline Shaw’s Punctum, a piece inspired by Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and Luke Cissell’s Poor Lazarus,, a liminal suite evocative of bluegrass, old-time fiddling, gospel and folk music from the composer’s native Kentucky and southern Indiana. The third première, entitled By and By, is a collection of new works by Caroline Shaw for string quartet and soprano which uses texts from traditional bluegrass and gospel songs, including Fifty Miles of Elbow Room, and I’ll Fly Away.
